This is one of the cooler projects I've gotten to do. I was supplied assets from classic MK levels and tasked with recreating the levels as a material treatment for the Retrocade stage. I had initially created a master material to handle all the variations for simplicity's sake, but trying to shove all the logic into a single material just wasn't realistic and was hindering the authenticity of the levels, so I decided to just make a unique material for each stage. It was a bit more work but ultimately had a huge payoff, as I was able to get a ton of the original elements working nicely.
The Parallax for all the "layers" of each stage is tied to the camera's lateral motion, with parameters to change how much each layer will shift (so foreground objects stay stationary on the mesh while farther back objects will track with the camera more).
The projector's scattered around the Retrocade also have fake light shafts coming out of them that are adopting all the same logic as the screens themselves. The mesh for these was created by creating concentric cylinders and projecting UV's down the length of them (rather than wrapping UV's, as you typically would on a cylinder), and then deforming the cylinders into cone shapes. This way the screen image will take on the form of light rays down the length of the cones and fairly accurately project what's on the screens.

Pit - I can't get away from these bridge guys. I've implemented them in MKX, MK11's Krypt, and now Retrocade!
Pit Detail. You can see in this clip that the flames on screen are also present on the lights shafts from the projector in the bottom left of the image. The materials on the light shafts have all the same logic as the ones on screen.
Shang Tsung's Courtyard
Kahn's Arena
Living Forest - It's not present in this clip, but the faces on the trees were set up to animate just like in the original stage.
Portal
Subway
Temple
Shang Tsung's Throne Room - Includes all the best head tracking technology that the early 90s had to offer.
